Who We Are

Save The Park! Sauvons le parc! is a citizens’ group formed to protect the integrity of Westmount Park which is endangered by The City of Westmount’s proposed replacement of grassland by artificial turf in the whole southern section of the park.

We are against any installation of artificial surface anywhere in the existent Park and we intend to fight all such projects, now and in the future. We want to maintain the park as a natural greenspace. We are also pledged to protect the Park and its unusual flora.

Westmount Park is a recognized jewel of North American landscape design. It was begun in 1899 and was inspired by the principles of Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of Mount Royal Park. From the beginning, Westmount authorities sought to maintain the natural features of this unique urban greenspace. Within a generation, the Park became so popular that the City of Westmount acquired the southern section now under threat precisely in order to extend the greenspace of Westmount Park.

Save The Park! Sauvons le parc! aims to inform the widest number of people about the threat to this heritage site and its ecology. Our group is a member of the National Association for Olmsted Parks in Washington, D.C. (naop.org).

The pictures you see at the top of this page show you what will be destroyed if artificial turf gets installed. If you wish to join our group or help us, please contact us at our web site. We also would like you to sign our on-line petition by filling in the fields at the bottom of this page.

To sign this petition simply fill in your name, address, email and telephone number. If, for reasons of privacy, you do not want to give your address, email or telephone number you are not obligated, but it would be very much appreciated. If you do give your details, we will not put it on the web-site publicly. We welcome guest signatures, but at a later point we will be presenting an all-Westmount list to the City.

We, the undersigned, petition the City of Westmount, its Mayor, and its Council to reject any proposals which will damage the natural greenspace within the present area of Westmount Park and to reject any plan to install artificial turf in any of the Park’s area.
